Looking Back at 2016 and Forward to 2017

Happy New Year!

2016 finally ended. It sure has been a long  ride with so many shocking events that happened from numerous terrorist attacks, through Brexit and Donald Trump being elected for president, to the deaths of many iconic celebrities.

For me this wasn’t the best year but it also wasn’t the worst. I achieved some fairly great things. I had a lot of memorable moments with my friends, met new people and got closer to some of my acquaintances. I found new favourite music, TV shows and books and rediscovered old ones. My mentality and my general outlook on life changed a lot and I became more confident. As Kylie Jenner said,  this year really was “the year of realizing stuff.”

I know that the future is uncertain and things often go wrong but I do hope 2017 will be better. Cheers to the new beginning! See you again soon.

Baking Honey Gingerbread Cookies (Get into the Christmas spirit Pt. 3)

Hello, there!

We have movies, we have gifts. What else do we need to really get into the festive mood? That’s right! Food. And nothing says Christmas better than some freshly baked gingerbread cookies. You can find more than 10 different recipes for this, but since I love to experiment I decided to come up with my own. So, here is how I made my Honey Gingerbread Cookies!

  • 3 cups flour + some more for rolling out the dough
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons gingerbread spice mix
  • 6 tablespoons melted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • vanilla

In a small bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and the spice mix. In a bigger bowl beat the butter, brown sugar, and egg until well blended. Add honey and vanilla and continue to mix. Once it is well blended gradually stir in the dry ingredients until you get a smooth dough. Wrap it in plastic and let it cool in the fridge for about 20 minutes.

Preheat oven to 200° C. Grease or line cookie sheets with parchment paper. Get the dough out of the fridge and roll it to a scant 1/2 cm thick. Use the additional flour to avoid sticking. Cut out cookies with desired cutter (don’t forget to make at least one gingerbread man). Bake for 10-15 minutes. After cookies are cool you may decorate them with powdered sugar glaze or Royal icing, or just eat them because they taste wonderful any way.

Gift Ideas (Get into the Christmas spirit Pt.2)

Hello, there!

You can hear the sleigh bells jingling, but you still haven’t bought presents for your family and friends? Don’t worry, though! I am here with some ideas for Christmas presents that never go out of style!

  • “Ugly” Christmas sweatertumblr_mbahkxzzli1r4v0u8o1_500

There’s literally nothing more festive to give someone you love. No matter if you go for a traditional or modern pattern you can be sure that this is a gift everyone will love.

You can get some more inspiration here.

Practical and hilarious. Socks would always be a good idea, because you can find them with different themed patterns from food to Renaissance paintings and every person needs them.

  • Blanket566f570348c084519af172002cb934b2

Perfect for the person who is always cold or just loves to take naps. Also a present that will give you the perfect excuse to cuddle up with your significant other in front of the fire place.

  • Home-made baked goodschristmaswallpapers252852529

What a better way to say “You’re special to me!” than baking some delicious cookies, cupcakes, brownies or any other sweet goods? Just find an easy recipe, do some cooking magic, put your baked masterpieces in a cute basket and add a fancy bow.

  • A music box that plays Christmas melodiesmerrychristmasmusicbox81143

An old-fashioned gift that would make even the grumpiest Christmas hater feel the festive spirit. These are a little bit hard to find  which makes the present even more special.

  • Mug76338_22

Just like the socks mugs can be found anywhere and come in thousands awesome designs and shapes. You can never have enough mugs and all of them are cute. To make this present even better you can fill it with packages of the person’s favourite tea or instant hot chocolate.

  • A gift card

Probably the most trivial, but at the same time the best gift you can get someone because you can never go wrong with it.

Those were my gift ideas. I hope you find them helpful!

8 Christmas Movies to Watch Over the Holiday Season (Get into the Christmas spirit Pt.1 )

Hello there!

It’s already December, the first snow has fallen which means the holidays are near. It’s time to get out the Christmas sweater, decorate the house, pop some popcorn, cuddle under a blanket and watch a good movie. Here are my 8 movie recommendations for the Christmas season!

1. A Christmas Carolcuentodenavidad0912

I am sure everyone knows the story of Scrooge and the three ghosts of Christmas. There are at least hundred movie adaptations of the classic novel by Charles Dickens, however, the one I like most is the animated version from 2009 with Jim Carrey. The animation and the special effects are breathtaking and I believe Robert Zemeckis really managed to give the old story a fresher look in the distinctive style of Disney.

mpw-560252. The Nightmare Before Christmas

It is quite debatable whether this is a Halloween or a Christmas movie, but I really like it that’s why I’m including it in this list. Plus, let’s be honest, the king of Halloweentown discovering the meaning of Christmas is pretty festive, despite all the monsters.

how_the_grinch_stole_christmas_film_poster3.  How The Grinch Stole Christmas

Throughout the year the Grinch surely has become one of the symbols of Christmas and watching this movie I can see why. I must admit I have only seen the remake with Jim Carrey (I really like his acting!), but nevertheless the story it tells is incredible and would appeal to everyone from children to elders.

elf_ver3_xlg4. Elf

Since Christmas time is all about spending time with the people you love, namely your friends and family, here’s another movie that people of all ages love. “Elf” is about a human boy raised by Santa’s elves that goes on a quest to find his real family. It’s incredibly funny and I guarantee it will make you laugh until you cry.

about_a_boy5. About a Boy

Normally I am not a big fan of movies in the drama genre, this is one of the exceptions. The story is a bit stereotypical for the genre, an adult is being taught important life lessons from a child, but it’s really heartwarming and has something for everyone: romance, a pinch of comedy and a lot of eye-opening messages.

open-uri20150422-12561-1kqpnte_5d4f6f426. The Santa Clause

A man accidentally kills Santa and has to take his place. Sounds a bit dark, doesn’t it? Well, it’s not. If anything this movie is the complete opposite of dark. It’s one of the most hilarious Christmas flicks and perfect to watch with the whole family on a movie night over the festive season.

the-polar-express-movie-poster-2004-10105465337. Polar Express

This movie fills my heart with joy and warmth literally every time I watch it. A boy taking a magical train and going on an adventure to the North Pole during which he learns about friendship, bravery and believing in wonders. If isn’t the true spirit of Christmas, I don’t know what is.

home_alone_ver2_xxlg8. Home Alone

Would Christmas even be real without it? To me and probably to a lot other people this is more than just a movie. Kevin being accidentally left alone in the house has became a Christmas  tradition.

Those were my Christmas movie recommendations! I hope you have time to enjoy them over the holidays.

Songs to fight the fog in your mind (A Playlist to Make You Happy in These Cold Times)

Hello, there!

So the air’s getting colder. With Christmas right around the corner and the last yellow leaves turning brown, I have been in a very melancholic mood. I believe I am not the only one that feels this way. Therefore, I decided to dedicate my afternoon to making this playlist with some chill tunes that help me cheer up and get the dark thoughts out of my head. It includes songs by a part of my favourite musicians which I hope you will like just as much as I do.

Aesthetically pleasing horror? (The Neon Demon Review)

Hello there!

Halloween was a few days ago and it would be a crime if you don’t watch at least one horror film just for the spirit of the holiday. This year my friends and I decided to see The Neon Demon, a film that came out a few months ago starring Elle Fanning as lead actress.1jwausk2olof34s8p45z9szuf6

The plot follows an aspiring model in Los Angeles whose youth and vitality are devoured by a group of beauty-obsessed women who will take any means necessary to get what she has. In theory it sounds interesting and the trailer was really promising but in reality in was not even half as good. First of all, there were a lot of plot holes. I know that this is a common problem in this genre, but here it was just annoying since there was almost no action. The whole time I was expecting something thrilling to happen yet nothing was happening. All the scary and gory scenes were congested in the last 20 minutes which was a notch too much and by the end it got just messed up. What I did like, however, was the general atmosphere of the film. It was really beautiful and aesthetically pleasing for a horror (no surprise since it’s set in the Los Angeles fashion world). It is visible that it took a lot of hard work to make it look like that.

Overall, I think it was kind of a mixture between Black Swan and Scream Queens and it would be a lie to say I didn’t enjoy it at least a little bit. Would I watch it again? Probably not. Would I recommend it? Only if you are ready for 117 minutes of thinking “What the hell is happening?” and “Oh, God, that is too messed up!”.the-neon-demon-art

My rating: 4.5/10

A to Z (Get to know me better)

Hello, there!

I said I was planning to do a post dedicated to my favourite things, but that’s not original and I hate having to choose one thing I like before another. So instead I found a post on tumblr.com with a question for each letter of the alphabet.

Without any further ado let’s go!

a – age

  • 18 years, 5 months, 12 days and 14 hours.

b – biggest fear

  • Definitely darkness because God knows what can be lurking in it.

c – current time

  • 10:41 pm

d – drink you last had/are having

  • I had a cup of green tea just before I started writing.

e – easiest person to talk to

  • My mother. She is the one person I can share everything with.

f – favourite song

  • I hate that question so much! The music I listen to usually represents what I’m feeling inside so my favourite song changes depending on my emotions.  I guess the one song I will always love is Hourglass by Catfish and the Bottlemen because of its lyrics.

g – ghosts, are they real

  • Honestly, I don’t know. I like to believe they are real since I’ve watched documentaries on that topic, but I’ve never seen a ghost and it’s hard to believe in something you haven’t seen personally.

h – heritage

  • I am too young to think about this.

i – in love with

  • Life.

k – kissed someone

  • As lame as it sounds I have never kissed someone on the lips, only on the cheek or the forehead.

l – last time you cried

  • A few weeks ago, probably. I don’t really remember.

p – person who you last called

  • My cousin.

  • “How do you know that?”

r – reason to smile

  • Animals, flowers, nature in general.

s – song last sang

  • Green Day-  Bang Bang

t – time you woke up

  • I believe it was around 7 am.

u – underwear colour

  • Black (just like my soul).

w – worst habit

  • Furiously biting my pen; leaving dishes in the sink but never washing them; postponing.

x – x-rays you’ve had

  • Right arm when I was 7, left arm when I was 12 and my left leg a few years ago.

y – your favorite food

  • Literally anything, except figs and green beans.
